What does this sentence mean and what is the tone?

The author is fleeing something (in this poem, seemingly God). Imagine him speeding up ("up vistaed hopes") and down ("adown titanic glooms") an unhospitable landscape ("chasmed fears") to get away. I would say the tone is desperate, as he is putting himself in dangerous places to get away.
